What is "Oil Well Control"?
is the management of the hazardous effects of unexpected high pressures on the surface equipment of drilling rigs when exploring and drilling for oil and/or natural gas. Oil Well Control, or simply, "well control," are the procedures, technologies and processes that are utilized in the oil and natural gas industry. Oil well control includes the areas of;
oil and natural gas drilling operations
well workovers /workover rigs
in order to maintain the fluid column hydrostatic pressure and formation pressure to prevent influx of formation fluids into the well's bore.
Oil well control involves and integrates the estimation of formation fluid pressures, reservoir pressures / the strength of the subsurface formations and the use of casing and mud density to offset those pressures in a predictable and safe manner. It is absolutely critical to understand the various working conditions, environments, geologies, and reservoirs and how the various pressures and pressure relationships function within the area of oil well control.

More about Oil Well Control:
As previously described, Oil Well Control is the management of the hazardous effects of unexpected high pressures on the surface equipment of drilling rigs when exploring and drilling for oil and/or natural gas.
Drilling fluid is used when drilling a new oil/natural gas well and provides an amount of well control.
Inadequate measures to provide for effective oil well control, can result in an oil well blowout, and cause serious damage, injury, or death, as in the case of British Petroleum's (BP) Deepwater Horizon catastrophe which occurred on April 20, 2010. BP's failure to maintain sufficient Oil Well Control on the drilling rig caused the oil well blowout which caused an explosion and fire and the deaths of 11 of the drilling rigs employees, and the worst environmental disaster of all time.
Oil Well Control includes the monitoring of the well's pressures and the proper safe-operating procedures for operating the well site equipment - which can vary widely from well-to-well depending on "bottom hole reservoir pressures."
What
are Blowout
Preventers?
Blowout Preventers or "BOP" are large valves that can quickly seal off (at the surface wellhead) an oil or gas well that is being drilled or worked over.
During oil and natural gas well drilling, the BOP valve immediately closes if overpressure from an underground zone causes formation fluids (oil and natural gas) to enter the wellbore and threaten the safety of the workers on the rig or the rig itself. By closing the BOP valve (via hydraulic actuators), the drilling crew can prevent explosive pressure release from the well, and once again control the downhole pressure of the well. BOP valves can be opened again once downhole pressure is under control. The BOP valve is located within the "BOP Stack."
Blowout Preventers have helped eliminate deaths, injuries and environmental disasters associated with oilwell "gushers."
What is Blowout
Prevention?
Blowout prevention is an oil and gas technology that uses Blowout Preventers to prevent an oil or gas well from blowout.
What is a BOP Stack?
A "BOP Stack" is a set or group of "blowout preventers" that are found on every oil and natural gas drilling rig as well as the oil and gas well.
The BOP Stack controls the pressure within the oil and gas well.
The BOP Stack is typically located below the rig floor and after the drilling rig is removed, is at the top of the well, frequently referred to as the "Christmas tree."
What is "Drilling
and Completion"?
In the Oil and Natural Gas industry, drilling and completion, refers to the two-step processes of;
1. Drilling (and casing) the oil and/or natural gas well, and then
2. Completing the well, which immediately follows the drilling process.
The completion process includes the final steps of completing the well, including testing the well, selection of the valves and well's production equipment which then enable the well to begin production of oil and/or natural gas.
What is a Gas
Well Blowout?
A gas
well blowout is the uncontrolled
release of natural gas from a natural gas well which occurs after pressure
control systems (Blowout
Preventers) have failed.
Before oil well pressure control devices were developed - starting in the 1920s,
oil well blowouts were common, and referred to as; gushers, wild wells or just
blowouts.
What is Gas Well
Control?
Gas Well Control - like Oil Well Control - is the management of the hazardous effects of unexpected high pressures on the surface equipment of drilling rigs when exploring and drilling for oil and/or natural gas.
Drilling fluid is used when drilling a new oil/natural gas well and provides an amount of well control.
Inadequate measures to provide for effective Gas Well Control - or - Oil Well Control, can result in an oil well blowout, and cause serious damage, injury, or death, as in the case of British Petroleum's (BP) Deepwater Horizon catastrophe which occurred on April 20, 2010. BP's failure to maintain sufficient Oil Well Control on the drilling rig caused the oil well blowout which caused an explosion and fire and the deaths of 11 of the drilling rigs employees, and the worst environmental disaster of all time.
Gas Well Control and Oil Well Control includes the monitoring of the well's pressures and the proper safe-operating procedures for operating the well site equipment - which can vary widely from well-to-well depending on "bottom hole reservoir pressures."
What is an Oil and Gas
Well?
An oil and gas well is the equipment required - some on the surface and other equipment that cannot be seen as it is underground - produces oil and natural gas from the underground reservoir that contains the fossil fuel.
What
is an Oil Well
Blowout?
An oil
well blowout is the uncontrolled
release of crude oil from an oil well which occurs after pressure control
systems (Blowout
Preventers) have failed.
Before oil well pressure control devices were developed - starting in the 1920s,
oil well blowouts were common, and referred to as; gushers, wild wells or just
blowouts.
What is "Upstream
Oil and Gas"?
The oil and natural gas industry is divided into three major segments:
Upstream
Midstream
Downstream
The
Upstream Oil
and Gas segment
is a term that refers to the searching, drilling and production of crude oil and
natural gas. The Upstream Oil and
Gas segment is also known as the "exploration
and production" or "E&P" segment.
The Upstream
Oil and Gas segment includes; exploring for potential underground
(or underwater) oil and natural gas fields (or reservoirs), drilling of
exploratory wells, and operating/producing the oil
and natural gas wells that "pay" with crude oil and/or
natural gas.
